Greetings from Charles Murnan in Nebraska

Greetings from another branch of the Murnan family. I am Charles B. Murnan, Jr., son of Charles, Sr. of Omaha, Nebraska, whose father was Clyde Murnan. Where it goes back from there I do not know as I was never privileged to such info.

My father, Charlie, had brothers, Harold, now dead, and Leo, who is living in Omaha. He has several sons and family members. I have a Son, Charles B. Murnan III and he has a son, Uriah Murnan, who is in Atlanta, Georgia. My brother, Don Murnan, is in Seattle, Washington, and has son Dan and daughter now married.

My sister, Karen Murnan, is married to Karl Miller in Tucson, Arizona. They have three sons.

Thank you for the excellent history of family name, etc. Interesting to know how many there must be today.

And Here’s John Murnane, also in Nebraska

My name is John Terrence Murnane. I am located in Omaha, Nebraska and was very excited to stumble upon this website. Every once in a while, I try to find some info on family history, with little luck. I am trying to piece together the names of my great-grand father and great great grandfather to possibly add some info to your list. I was very excited to read about the family name history and hopefully I will be able to piece the rest of us here in Omaha to some part of our Irish immigrants. I believe my great-grandparents came from Alabama somewhere, but I will research this further and get back with you. Thanks for putting such a great site together. Keep up the good work. My mom was from Chicago and I always wanted to stop in at the Murnane Paper Company to see if I can find out something. Thanks for this opportunity.

Still More about Murnanes Who Settled in Minnesota

My grandmother's hobby was tracking the lineage of her grandchildren. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Mayflower Society and was very good at this so I assume it is probably correct. According to her records my great-great-grandfather Patrick Murnane (born about 1805) came to the United States in 1850. He came with three children from his first wife Mary Whelan, who died soon after the youngest was born.

After coming to the U.S. from Ireland, he moved to Minnesota (I do not have the names of these children). He married Mary Flannigan in 1852 and they had three children Patrick Howard (born 2 October, 1863), John (born about 1854) and William (born 21 July, 1859). Patrick died in 1873 at Fort Ridgely/West Newton. My great-grandfather was Patrick Howard who was born during a Sioux uprising in Fort Ridgely/West Newton. He married Jane Maxwell and died in St. Paul Minnesota on 4 February, 1938. They had six children, John Patrick (my grandfather), Mary, Laura, Thomas, Francis and James.

My grandfather had 4 children, including Leonard Francis, my father. My immediate family, including my father and grandfather/grandmother and aunts and uncles moved to California in the 1940s. I now reside in San Francisco.

More Information on Tipperary Marnanes!

It’s wonderful to find your site. Allow me to add my local bit to all the rest. My great-grandmother was Mary (or Margaret Marnane) of 'Cappagh' as we call it at home in Tipperary. She married my great-grandfather John Keogh in Bansha on 19 February 1857. Their 10 children were as follows:

    Elizabeth b. 31/01/1854 * (born before John & Mary married - quite a usual occurrence for the time but I believe she died as an infant;

Patrick b.16/03/1858 (Baptismal Sponsors: Michael Keogh & Bridget Marnane)

    Elizabeth b.1/04/1859

    Edmond b. 11/01/1861(Baptismal Sponsors: Edmond Marnane & Mary O'Neill)

Mary b. 28/01/1863 (Baptismal Sponsor: Margaret Marnane)

    Catherine b. 05/02/1865

Bridget b. 10/10/1867(Baptismal Sponsors: Pat Marnane & Norry Crowe)

Ellen b. 13/11/1869 (Baptismal Sponsors: John Nugent & Mary Marnane)

    Margaret b. 26/05/1872 (Baptismal Sponsors: John Murnane & Mgt.Morrissey)

    Michael b. 16/07/1874

I believe Mary's father was 'Ned' or Edmond Marnane of Cappagh. Any ideas on linking this to your own information? In addition, Mary's husband John Keogh died in 1875 leaving her to bring up the children on her own. As yet I do not know when Mary died or where she was buried.

I hope this is of additional value; any other queries, contact me.

As I wrote privately, I would not be surprised if your Edmond Marnane was a first or second cousin of my great-grandfather, also Edmond Marnane. They lived in the same area and probably visited the same pubs. My Edmond’s father was William; I bet we could make a connection if the old records still existed!

More Information on New York Murnanes

I have just discovered your website in the course of researching my roots and wanted to share some of my family's background. My father was born Francis Marsh Murnane in Queens, New York but was given up for adoption. He has since located his family, most of whom are in upstate New York, including an older brother he didn't know he had (Paul W. Murnane in Scarsdale, New York).

My father met my mother in Denver, where they married and settled. He and my brothers and I still live in the Denver area; my mother is deceased. My father knows much more than I do about the family history; I do know that his grandparents immigrated from Ireland in the mid-1800's.

I am fascinated with my heritage and would love to exchange information, stories, legends, etc.

Trying To Reach Des Marnane in Tipperary

I’m trying to communicate with Des Marnane. There may be a family connection.

My name is Kathleen Marnane Waldrop. My grandfather, Thomas Marnane, left Tipperary in the late 1800s for Salt Lake City, Utah. He was the oldest of 13 children, 9 of whom survived. His youngest sibling, Timothy Marnane joined him several years later, had two children and returned to Tipperary.

Our family story has it that he and his wife decided that America was not a fit place to raise children. He worked at your animal auction until his death. I met his daughter, Bridget Lonnergan in 1983 in Tipperary. Lovely lady, but not able to communicate with me after the visit. I don't think she could read or write. We also found the grave of Father Timothy Marnane, her brother at a church cemetery there. Bridget mentioned that there was a connection to a woman who owned a store called "Marnane's Dress Shop," and that the owner had a son who taught history in town. (The store was closed for vacation, so we did not find her.) Might that son be Dennis Marnane?

In 1983 my husband, two sons, and I visited Tipperary. We spent some time looking for a family connection and found some with the help of Tom and Mary Marnane at whose Bed and Breakfast we stayed.

If this reaches Dennis, please ask him to respond. I would love to share info about our family here in America. My grandfather is long since gone, and my father, Thomas Marnane, Jr., in 1992. He was an only child. His descendants are in San Francisco, California, San Antonio, Texas, Washington, D.C., and London, England.

Definitely, not such a long way to Tipperary.

More About Murnanes of Emly Parish, Tipperary

I have just returned from a trip to Ireland, and in the process of looking up a friend's relatives from Emly Parish, County Tipperary, discovered a strong Murnane connection. According to the Parish Priest, Murnanes were and are still living in that region (about one hour outside Cashel). At the cemetery, I discovered several headstones, including one for Mary Murnane. As soon as the photos are developed, I will send them your way.

The priest also mentioned that many of those born in Emly were eventually buried in Troy, NY. This is where my immediate Murnane family (John and Marion Murnane and their seven children and many grandchildren & great-grandchildren) reside.

More About Chicago Murnanes

I read with interest your web pages and especially the one on Chicago Murnanes. I have a bit of information I have gleaned from before 1982 and if you want it I will be happy to send it on to you. The James Murnane you list of 1869 I believe was my James who later became a policeman. James married a Catherine LEO. She was from Newport, County Tipperary. She was the only daughter of John Leo and Mary Byrne of Oakhampton-Newport. I had the opportunity to personally check the parish records in Newport and did not find a marriage there for them but a letter written by their daughter Mary many years later stated her parents mar in Ireland and came almost directly to the US.

James’ death certificate stated he was born Tipperary, Ireland (info by son Michael). I never checked the naturalization record but the 1900 census states he came in 1857 and by that time was naturalized. Somehow I am not sure this is all correct as their first child was born in Chicago 20 January, 1869 which seems like a long lapse of time. James was born 6 January, 1840 possibly in Newport or there abouts.

James Murnane's Father was listed as Michael Murnane and his Mother Mary Foley. Sorry but I didn't get into researching them. I am a LEO. My Great-grandfather was James Leo, oldest Brother of Catherine who came here first in 1849 to Boston. Two other brothers emigrated also, Patrick and Daniel Leo, who also came to Chicago after 1849. I had better make certain this gets to you before I go any further.

I always do "sideways" research in my genealogy as it was finally through the info on the death certificate for Patrick Leo that I found that the Leo family was from Newport. My James Leo's death certificate said he came from Ireland -- that I already knew.

Any Connections With Merrins Family?

I saw your web site and name mentioned in the Access Internet Magazine in the Denver Post this past Sunday. I am looking for info on Patrick A. Merrins and Theressa Grooms Merrins. I am told that Merrins is not an Irish name but my grandfather, Edward Dominic Merrins, said that his parents were from Ireland. Patrick was from

Kilkenny and came to the US in 1892. Theresa came to the US in 1893. My grandfather was born in 1901in Manhattan, NY. He was the third child of about five I think.

At some point Patrick left the family and Theressa put my grand father and his older siblings in an orphanage because she couldn't afford to keep them. I am wondering if Merrins could be an Americanization of Murnane. It is not a very common name. I figure if the name was changed upon arrival to the US that it might be some what close to the original. Murnane and its other forms seemed similar and Kilkenny is relatively close to Cork, Limerick and Tipperary. It is a long shot I realize, but, with genealogy you get leads in strange places I have learned.

Any help or ideas you have would be greatly appreciated.

Nice Message; Thanks To Bill Gusky’s Kindness

This is an update on a bulletin board posting of December 14, 1998 about an heirloom for Connecticut (1912) Murnanes. Through the kindness of Bill Gusky who posted the notice and your kindness in maintaining the Murnane web site, an heirloom was reunited with our family. Bill had found a book that my great-grandmother had inscribed and given to my great uncle on his 13th birthday, 110 years ago, on 17 October 1889. Bill

graciously sent the book to me. When I first started researching my ancestors and visited your web site, I never thought that something so special and tangible would result. Thank you for making it possible.

Found Relatives Spelled "Maurnane"    aus-tiny.gif (1255 bytes)

All who are actively researching their antecedents may be interested to know that some of my forebears have just been located in Griffith's Valuations. They appear under the spelling of "Maurnane." I suppose that this version should have been an obvious option but no one in our circle thought to try it.

It just shows what persistence is needed to unearth some of our less cooperative relations - for those who are interested, they were in Ballyryan West and while we had details of a marriage in the Parish of Solohead under Murnane, they appear in Griffith's under the alternative spelling and the Parish listed as Sologheadmore

Limerick Marnane Looking For Help Before Visit

My name is Evelyn Marnane, descended from Thomas Marnane and Hanorah Coleman Marnane of County Limerick, Ireland. Thomas was born in 1850, Bulgrdon, County Limerick. Hanorah Coleman was born in1858, Balinta Athlacca. My grandfather, Patrick Marnane was their oldest child.

He was born in 1878, Balinta Athlacca, Parish of Banogue, County Limerick. The family immigrated to the United States sometime before 1883. Patrick's brother, Thomas, Jr. was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1883. Apparently they returned to Ireland at a later date. Patrick's father, Thomas, Sr. died in Ireland in 1886.

I hope to visit Ireland in 2001. There is a lot of information on the Internet about Murnane's, but little on Marnane. Would it be possible for you to give me a starting point where I can go further back? Either on the Internet or in Ireland. I am very new at this and could use assistance.

A Serious Message About Health Issues And Genealogy     aus-tiny.gif (1255 bytes)

As you are aware there many reasons why people decide to compile a Family Tree. The first Family Tree I compiled, many years ago, was for medical purposes and since that time both Kerin and I have maintained an interest in this side of family history research.

Given the work that is being carried out on the Murnane site at the present time, we would suggest that urgent consideration be given to the inclusion of a "medical condition section" for each branch. This section need not be lengthy or involved, but should just list known inherited medical conditions: blood conditions, cleft palate, coeliac disease, renal failure, etc.

To add to this section, or to get more information, there should be someone in each branch, who would be willing to act as an agent for passing on relevant information. Kerin and I would be prepared to act in this capacity, for our branch of Murnanes.

Polyglandular autoimmune syndrome type 1 or Autoimmune polyendocrinopathy-candidiasis-ectodermal dystrophy (APECED) syndrome. Has anyone heard of it or had any family problems with this or related conditions?

We recently received a request from a family member, for assistance in trying to discover a blood link between herself and her husband. The reason for this is that inherited gene faults have affected three of their four children. One is already deceased and the other two have serious problems. The genetic problems are almost unknown in this country (Australia), and the chances of two unrelated people having the problem gene is astronomical. So far, the only link between the two families that has been uncovered, is geographical.

After five years of diagnostic tests, our grand-daughter has just been diagnosed as having Coeliac disease and our immediate family will all have to be blood-tested to find out how many have the problem to perhaps a lesser degree. This is an inherited defect.

(Jan and Kerin,

Your important message is very welcome. While I am doubtful that we can find someone in each of our many family groups to coordinate the gathering and sharing of information, we will create a new "Family Health Concerns" section on this website and we will notify our regular participants that it exists. We will also create a link from the section on your branch of the Murnane Clan to this new section with a notation that important health information is available.

I welcome any comments and suggestions as to how we can communicate this information more effectively.

Cork Murnane Descendant, Now in Wales, Seeks Information    gb-tiny.gif (820 bytes)

My name is Patricia Anne Farmer and I live in Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire, Wales U.K. and I have found the Murnane website.

I am interested in tracing my ancestors and present relatives in the County Cork area of Ireland. My late mother, Bridget Agnes Murnane, was born 17th February 1919 in Ladysbridge near Castlemartyr, County Cork. Her parents were David Murnane & Mary Brien. She had (I think) three sisters and four brothers. Her sister Elizabeth lived in Luton, Bedfordshire and I know of my three female cousins (daughters of Aunt Liz).

My mother Bridget (or possibly Brigid, according to the baptismal records) traveled to England when she was 18 (1937) and lived in London and then Middlesex where she nursed during the war. She moved with her nursing to the Midlands (Exhall, Warwickshire) and consequently met my father Jabez Wagstaff and married in April 1948. I was Born Nov.1949.

She lived in Bulkington, Nuneaton Warwickshire and then moved to Wales to be nearer to me in 1986. Sadly, she died in June 1996. Bridget`s sisters were (not in chronological order) Marguerite (known as Peggy) married to a seafarer; Mary, a doctor’s housekeeper? and Elizabeth, who also came to England and nursed in Nuneaton, Warwickshire, married Jimmy Doyle (a Kerry man), moved to Luton and had three daughters, Julie, Margaret and Kathy.

I know very little of her brothers. John, I believe, lived in a bungalow overlooking Ballycotton Lighthouse. David, I think, lived in Mogeely Road, Castlemartyr and had three children, John, Mary and Gerard, presently living in Mogeely Road. I met them and my grandmother in 1963/64.

Another brother, Patrick, also moved to England but I do not know any details and have no other knowledge of her other brother. I hope this may prove of interest to someone and I look forward to any comments or response.

Murnans In Utah Speak Up!

I was disturbed to find that your website said there were no "Murnanes" in Utah, because there are. My last name is Murnan, spelled differently, but pronounced the same. My father, originally a Murnan, moved to Utah from California about twenty years ago. His father is Chalmer Murnan, a resident of California, and his father's name was Ephraim Murnan, who has passed away, and I am not sure where he lived. I know that my ancestors came from Ireland, and I am interested to know what I can about the "Murnane/Murnan" family. My name is Amber Murnan, age 16.

(Hi Amber,
It is nice to hear from you, and to learn that there are Murnans in Utah! The list of states that is included on our website is based on telephone directory listings in 1997, when that section of the website was created. It needs to be updated, and I will get that done within the next few weeks. In fact, I will add an explanation to the page TODAY so that you won't be upset any longer!

Please let us know as much about your family as possible. We'd like to include it on the website.

There are several spellings of our name, but all originate in the Counties of Cork, Limerick and Tipperary in southern Ireland. There also are several pronunciations. In Ireland, the name is generally pronounced as "mur-non" while in the US, there are three pronunciations: "murnin," with the accent on the first syllable; "mur-nan" with the accent on the second syllable, and "mur-nane" with a long a sound and the accent on the second syllable. My family pronounces it that way and the Murnanes I've met in Australia pronounce it that way also.

Thanks again for contacting us. Please stay in touch.
--Ed Murnane)

I was happy to hear from you so soon. My parents told me that there was a town or city in Ireland named Murnan, and when I was on the Internet this morning, I stumbled upon your website. I will have to wait to talk to my parents to further any information that I can give you.

I was also pleased to hear that you will be adding us to you webpage. We had a genealogy assignment in history about a week ago, and when I called my Grandfather, (Chalmer Murnan) he said that he was unaware of most of the information, that is what got me started looking into my family history.

Looking For French Murnane Information   fr-tiny.gif (174 bytes)

I found your site listed in a one-name study but your webpage looks like it only includes the Irish Murnanes.

Can you tell me if you have any info on Jean Gauthier-de-Murnane (AKA John Murnan)? His family was of French nobility and during the 1800s he was a Kentucky, USA pioneer.

Here’s Info On New Zealand Murnanes   nz-tiny.gif (1227 bytes)

(Copy of message from Michael Murnane in New Zealand to Paul Murnane in Australia.)

My name is Michael (Mike) Thomas Murnane from Auckland New Zealand. I am married to Lynda and I have two sons, Mathew and Andrew. My family originally settled in Napier on the East Coast of the north island of New Zealand in the early 1850's (I have been told 1852 but I haven't verified that yet).

I recently found the Murnane Website but to date haven't taken it any further. I have however started developing our New Zealand family tree.

A bit of brief history:

My great grandfather was Garrett Murnane who we believe was born in Ireland (Kerry?). He married Mary McNamara in Napier in 1879 and died in 1916. They had 9 children. I do not know why my great grandfather came to New Zealand but it is thought that he may have come via Australia. He had a brother Dennis and they jointly owned the Victoria Hotel in Napier.

My grandfather was Thomas Mathew Murnane and he was born in Greenmeadows (now a suburb of Napier) in 1890. He married Louisa Coe and they had 5 children. He died in 1977.

My father is Adrian Lawrence John Murnane and he was born in Napier on 14 May 1929. He married Margaret Mary Brophy and there are 6 children in my family.

As I said earlier I have only just started to put together our family tree, I have 130 odd names and I am now starting to verify dates etc. So any assistance you could offer would be greatly appreciated. I understand that there are various web sites where you can gain info but as I have really only just starting my research I don't know them yet. If you have a list of places to look I would be very grateful.

Until recently I wasn't aware that there was so many Murnanes in Australia. However Lynda and myself spent the last 2 years living in Melbourne on a business assignment. Much to our amazement the phone book was full of Murnanes particularly down in the southwest area of the state (Colac area). We also met a Catholic priest, Father Peter Murnane on a flight back to New Zealand. He gave us a bit of a potted history that was really the catalyst for my starting our family tree.

I look forward to hearing from you.

More News About Ogdensburg, NY Murnens

I came across your web site today. It is really nice. I will enjoy reading it and the "update" that you do. My husband, who is Frank McNulty from Queens, New York, is enjoying your web site too. He says that he is now motivated to find a "McNulty" site. I am Kathryn Macdonald McNulty and my mother (deceased since l993) was Florence Murnen Macdonald. Her dad was Michael Murnen (1861-1947) born and died in Ogdensburg, New York.

Michael was the son of Owen, and Catherine Cronin. Owen and Catherine Cronin had eight children. They left for the USA from Ireland about 1849 when their son Patrick was one year old.

Frank and I have six daughters and they are all married now. The youngest is Nancy Lynn McNulty Bennett who married Bob Bennett, from Jamestown, New York last summer. Nancy and Bob are celebrating their first anniversary and left yesterday for eight days of travel in Ireland. Nancy hopes to find some of her relatives in Cork County, while in Ireland. She found a bed and breakfast, in her Brian Moore B&B book that is in Skibereen, and the B&B is operated by Hannah Murnane. Nancy and Bob hope to stop and a visit. Have you any idea who this Hannah Murnane is?

Nancy has a genealogy sheet, that was once supplied to us by a cousin Mary Alice Murnen, from Toledo, Ohio from when she did a lot of family searching. Tim Murnen is Mary Alice's nephew and Tim has been writing us by e-mail in the past few months. We enjoy his web site too and we hope to meet all of the Toledo cousins, at some point.

Nice to have you with us; you’ll find lots of comment from Murnens in Ogdensburg and elsewhere. Hope Lynn and Bob have an enjoyable visit in Ireland. There are several Murnane/Marnane B&Bs in Ireland. One, in Tipperary, has a link on our website.

John Huter Murnane from Kentucky and West Virginia

My name is John Murnane Huter, and I'm from the Louisville, Kentucky area. I presently live in West Virginia. My mother’s name was Mary Murnane. She had a brother named Terry and sister named Mildred. I was given the middle name "Murnane" because my uncle didn't have any children to carry on the family name. I have two sons, Jacob Murnane Huter and Joseph Murnane Huter. I gave my sons their middle name for heritage reasons. This is all new to me. I'm just starting to look into all of this. Both my parents’ names are rare (Murnane-Huter). I am surprised to find a web site about the Murnanes. I am just starting to research about my families, so bear with me please. I'll be getting in touch with you again. It's kind of nice to know there is family out there. This is the first time in my life I have seen the name Murnane other than when I gave it out as mine or my sons’ names. I hope to hear from you soon.

Some Info On Murnan Family of Denver

I kind of accidentally came across your sight and found it very interesting. My mother's maiden name is Murnan and we have been told it was changed from Murnane or Marnane. We have also been told that we originally came from the region of Cork, Limerick or Tipperary. I do not have much knowledge of my roots but I pulled out an old Bible and found the names that go back to my great grand parents.

I do not know when we immigrated but have been told that three brothers all came over to the United States at the same time. This is what I know about the Murnan family:

My mother’s name is Ruth Margaret (Murnan) Reed. She has a brother named Thomas and a sister named Anita (Murnan) Saunders. Her father was Warren Thomas Murnan. He had no brothers but one sister. Her name was Lou. He was involved in street planning in the Denver area.

His father’s name was Michael Murnan who was a plumber in the Denver area and who had two brothers. We are not sure of their names but it has been suggested that one might be named William and the other went by the name of Jack but may have actually be a John. Warren also had a cousin named William who became fairly well known for sailing around the world in a small boat. He lived in Hawaii and Europe and retired in Sarasota, Florida.

My mother’s mother was Ruth (Mattison) Murnan. Warren Murnan’s parents were Michael Murnan and Margaret (Horn) Murnan. Ruth's Parents were Frank Mattison and Clara (?) Mattison. I realize I can't go back very far but it worth a try to see if you have any other information. This Murnan family all currently live in the Denver, Colorado area but I understand some of the relatives came from Chicago.

John Murnane From Nebraska Joins Us

My name is John Terrence Murnane. I am located in Omaha, Nebraska, and was very excited to stumble upon this website. Every once in a while, I try to find some info on family history, with little luck. I am trying to piece together the names of my great grand father and great-great grandfather to possibly add some info to your list. I was very excited to read about the family name history and hopefully I will be able to piece the rest of us here in Omaha to some part of our Irish immigrants. I believe my great grandparents came from Alabama somewhere, but I will research this further and get back with you. Thanks for putting such a great site together. Keep up the good work. My mom was from Chicago and I always wanted to stop in at the Murnane Paper Co. to see if I can find out something. Thanks for this opportunity.

Looking For Mernan or Murnan in Canada   ca.gif (443 bytes)

I am looking for my great grandfather's family. James B. Mernan (b. 1848) was said to have come from Canada when he was 17 to bring horses to the Union Army during the Civil War. He stayed on to care for the horses and was wounded. He received a pension. He married Mary Jane Powers when he was 32 in Muskegon, Michigan on 20 November 1881. Does anyone know of his family, or where they were from?

Thank you for your help.

Searching For Minnesota Murnane Connections

I was thrilled to find so much info on the Murnane family. I am hoping that one of them finds a connection to my Murnanes.

My GG-aunt Margaret Boland, DOB 26 December 1862 in Minnesota married Patrick Edward Murnane, DOB 8 March 1861 in Peoria, Illinois. (His father's name was also Patrick and he was a policeman for 26 years but I don't know where.) They married 3 July 1882 in the Cathedral in St Paul, Minnesota. Patrick Edward was the chief of police in St. Paul.

They had one son who lived, Edward Francis, DOB 10 November 1882 in St Paul, who married Anna Hayek. Edward was baptized 22 November 1882 in the Cathedral in St Paul. He was also the chief of police in St Paul.

Edward & Anna had the following children:

wWillard Edward, DOB 27 February 1907, St. Paul. He was an attorney.
wLawrence, DOB 2 September 1910, St Paul. DOD April1964.
wCharles, DOB 12 December 1913, St Paul. DOD August 1982, St. Paul. He was an attorney. Three policemen and two attorneys shows that the family had a definite interest in the law.

Can anybody connect with this and provide more data?

Murnane-Marnane Change Made By Americans?

I was just looking through the Internet when I stumbled upon your website.

My name is Colin Marnane. I am from Tipperary (Cahir). Our name was changed by the Americans during the Great Famine.

(Hi Colin,

Nice to hear from you. My family is from Tipperary, also, and I have relatives in Cahir. I’ve been there many times. I’m not sure you’re correct about the Americans changing the name during the famine. I have Murnanes and Marnanes in my family, and most agree that the spelling change was simply something that happened to different families in different circumstances. There are actually more "Murnane" listings in the Irish telephone books than "Marnane" listings. My great-grandfather signed some letters "Edmond Marnane" and some letters "Edmond Murnane!

Anyway, nice to hear from you. Send us more information about your family. Chances are pretty good we have a connection.

Another Minnesota Murnane Connection

My name is Ginny Schrenkler. I'm 27 years old and live in St. Paul, Minnesota. I was online one day and decided to look at some family trees trying to find my last name or my mother's. To my suprise I came across your web site! I was so excited because her maiden name is Murnane. She had done research a couple of years ago on the family tree and has been unable to locate any further information. We both looked at your site and read through it. I was unable to find any connection with the Murnane's on your web site.

I am looking the siblings/parents of my great-great-grandfather, Timothy Murnane, born about 1820-22 in County Cork. His date of death is unknown. Timothy married (I don't know where or when) Mary Katherine Fleming, date of birth 1816; date of death May 8, 1894, St.Paul, Minnesota.

I know that he emigrated from Ireland about 1850 (unknown ship or port) and lived in Windham, Connecticut, then moving to Waverly, Minnesota, about 1854. There is also some missing information about the death of Timothy during the Civil War. I have information on the family tree up to the present time and I would be happy to share the information that my Mother located about this Murnane family.

I would love to hear from you!

Dubliner Looking For Info on Joseph Murnane of Clare

Hey there!! I was surfing the web for my family name and came across your cool website. Basically I'm trying to track down my grandfather's relations who emigrated from Ireland to America, Canada and Australia. My name
is Kevin Martin Murnane, born October 15, 1974. I'm the only male grandchild in this Murnane family to carry on the name.

I have lived all my life here in Dublin with my family. That's where my grandfather was from but his people were from County Clare. As far as I know the story goes something like this. His grandfather was Protestant from a very wealthy Murnane clan in County Clare and because his grandfather married a Catholic girl he was disowned! This story has to ring a bell with someone. I also know some of them were very musical and traveled around the country a lot performing. I'll talk to my father as well to find birthdates and names of relatives who emigrated. He has far more knowledge than I do but I'm very curious to track them down. I want to know my cousins!

My father's name is Kevin Christopher Murnane, born May 19, 1946.  He married Rosanna Humphrey born May 19, 1946 also! My grandfather was Joseph Murnane. I'm unsure of his exact birth date but he spent his youth in military school and made a transition to sailor. He traveled the world and retired from Irish ferries around the early 1980's. He was married to Kathleen Hutton and they had five children together:

    Joseph Murnane, Jr.
    William (Billy) Murnane
    Pauline Murnane
    Kevin Murnane (my dad) (1946)
    Tessy Murnane

I know he had some stepbrothers but I'm sketchy with details at the moment. He died in 1989 and his wife, my
grandmother, Kathleen Murnane, died in 1994. I'm trying to track down his brothers and sisters and their next of kin who have emigrated to the U.S, Canada and Australia and would be thrilled if you could help me in any way possible.
