G-g-grandmother Was Murnane; London and Kentucky Roots

My name is Robert Earl Lee. I am researching my genealogy. I found that my Great-great-grandmother on my mother's side, was a Murnane. Here is the info I have.

Thomas Joseph Murnane, born 24 April 1852 in London, England; died 14 July 1938. Worked as a baggage director for MK&T Railway, came to America in 1872. Married Georgiana Evans, born 19 November 1852 in Henderson, Kentucky; died 5 February 1925.

Children: Mary Margaret "Gunga" Murnane, born 29 August 1878, in St. Louis, Missouri; died 13 September 1958. Married Louis Reichenstein, born unknown; died 1909.

If you need any more information, please let me know. I got this info from my grandmother. She probably has more stored away somewhere, but couldn't find it. Any help you can offer is appreciated. Thank you.

Here’s Information About Massachusetts-New Hampshire Murnanes

My grandmother Sarah Jane Johnson of Bantry-Durrus, County Cork, in November, 1893 in Andover, Massachusetts married John Murnane, son of Cornelius and Honora Murnane of Ireland.

They lived in Somerworth, New Hampshire, where John worked for the railroad. He died in November, 1898 of a bowel hemorrhage.

Their children were Mary Jane Murnane, born in 1894 and died in 1905; Nora, born in 1897 and died in 1899; and Cornelius J. born in February, 1896 and died in the 1970s.

Sarah remarried Edward Castle, Jr., a widower with several children. They raised them along with a Jerimiah Murnane and a Neil Murnane. Neil is listed in the Plaistow, New Hampshire census as a nephew. Both Jerimiah and Neil served in WWI but I have not been able to locate Neil after the 1910 census.

Jerimiah assumed the Castle name and is believed to have died in the 1970’s but record have not been located. Cornelius married Marion Carroll in 1920. He worked for the power company. Their son Jack is a professor at American University, Springfield, Massachusetts. Sarah Johnson’s aunt, Winifred Castle, married Patrick Donovan of Andover, Massachusetts. Census lists three Murnanes boarding with them: Daniel, born May, 1871; Patrick, born January, 1877; Dennis born March, 1873. I do not know if they were related to Sarah’s first husband, John Murnane. Also, there is a Mary Murnane listed as a witness at the wedding of John and Sarah. I hope this helps someone in his or her search. If anyone has any information on the Johnson family of Bantry-Durrus area (Sarah, William, Patrick, Daniel, Issac, all children of James Johnson and Jane (Donovan) Johnson) or has an address of the parish priest (Roman Catholic) for the area, I would appreciate the information.

Arizona Murnane Hopes To Connect With Columbus Murnane Clan

My name is Wendy Murnane, currently in Phoenix, Arizona, originally from Columbus, Ohio. My brother, Timothy Murnane also lives here in Phoenix. This information you have provided is so exciting! I believe that my I am close in tying my grandfather into the Murnane's in Columbus, specifically from the West Side. My grandfather, who passed away of Leukemia in 1969, was George.

He had a lot of brothers but I don't recall ever having any contact with them (I have mailed some info to my relatives back there asking for more information and hopefully some names). One of them was a doctor and I heard that the kids went to one of the private Catholic Schools on the West Side.

My grandfather was married to Catherine (maiden name not known) and they had five children: Robert (Bob), my father living in Florida; George (now deceased); and still living in Columbus are Lorraine, Sandra and John.

My son had a project for Cub Scouts researching our name and we found you (I think he'll get his badge...)

I will follow-up when I find out more detail on my grandfather/siblings/parents.   Thank you for providing this information and bringing everyone together.

Still Looking for Info About Murnan(e) Family of Chicago

My name is Susan Egan Wyatt, and I am the great-grand-daughter of Katherine "Kitty" Murnan and her husband, George Francis "Frank" Egan, of Chicago.

Saw your posting on the MURNANE site and wanted to say HI. We may be related -- who knows? How long has your family been in Chicago? My family spelled their name MURNAN, without the final "e." They arrived in Chicago after 1869.

Here is what I know about our MURNAN family at this point: According to the City of Chicago directories, the first MURNANE, James Murnane, a teamster, arrived in Chicago in 1869. Rosemary Egan Garon, Kitty's granddaughter, remembers the MURNAN family (pronounced "Mur NAN" and with no "E" on the end) being from County Tipperary in Ireland and being involved with carpentry, plumbing, etc. This would make sense considering that her father's EGAN side of the family included the Plumber for the City of Chicago, the Electrician for the City of Chicago, and the Chief of Alarms for the City of Chicago. A special census taken in 1871, the year of the Great Chicago Fire, lists a John MURNANE, who was a carpenter.

Rosemary and her brother Joe (my dad) remember a John Murnan, an Eddie Murnan, and at least one Jim Murnan being among their father's relatives. The MURNAN family lived on the South Side of Chicago, as did the EGAN family.

If any of this sounds familiar, I sure would love to hear from you! Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Hello from Brad Murnane in Australia  aus-tiny.gif (1255 bytes)

G’day. My name is Brad Murnane from Australia. I'll tell you a bit about myself.

I'm 19 years old, I love Engineering. I have a heap of close relatives who are fantastic with their hands. My great grandfather invented a new type of wire stainer, my grandfather was a aircraft mechanic in New Guinea in the Second World War.

He used to use a punch to make a worn piston larger, just to get that little bit extra out of them. My uncle runs a pub in north Melbourne, and I have another who does sculptor. My dad is a farmer, welder, policeman, and now he is a builder.

My brother plays squash, he's third in the state for his age group. My sister is studying at university. She won a $25 000 scholarship. There are two sets of twins in my family. And I think Murnane is a cool name to have. I would love to be part of your web site. Feel free to reply.

I live in Melbourne, Australia.

Murnane (Murnan) Link in New Jersey-New York

My name is Elizabeth Murnane Borden. I found your site accidentally and was intrigued. I don't know a lot about my family heritage but I do know that we came from Tipperary county. My grandfather's name is Jeremiah Murnane (born 1890's) and he lived in New Jersey until he died (Chatham). I think it was originally Murnan, and my great-grandparents settled in upstate New York or Maryland. I don't know the first thing about searching out ancestry, but your site said you were interested in anything Murnane, so I thought I could pass this along to you for whatever it's worth.

More About Murnane-Warren Connection,
And Murnanes in County Kerry

I am related distantly to the Murnanes of Glenflesk, County Kerry, specifically, a daughter of my grandfather's nephew, Dan O’Donoghue from Glenflesk (Derreenacollig Townland ), Cait ni Dhonoghue, married Mike Murnane of Aneebeg, Glenflesk about 1880. There were many Murnane families in that part of Kerry, smack up against the Cork border in the Derrynasaggart Mountains.

Oddly, they answered to two names, more or less indiscriminately-Murnane or Warren. It is a fact, little noticed in genealogical circles, as far as I can tell, that Irish-at least in that part of Munster often had two, wildly different orthogaphical versions of their surnames- e.g., Murnane/Warren, Healy/Kerrisk.

Grand-Mom Was Johanna Murnane of Killonan, Limerick    ir-tny.gif (178 bytes)

I have just spent the last couple of hours (!!!) visiting your web site. I am just starting to compile a family tree for my mother. Her mother’s maiden name was Johanna Murnane from Killonan, County Limerick born about 1888 died 1936. She had a brother, William Murnane, who married a Molly (or could be Nora my mother is not too sure!!) Ward who left William in the late 30's (?) to live somewhere in the U.S. They had no children here.

My mother also remembers a 1st cousin on her mother’s side, Margaret Hickey, who married a Frost and another 1st cousin, William Hickey. She also remembers her mother having a sister (name forgotten) who married a Walsh. It gets a bit confusing here – Johanna Murnane also had a stepbrother, Paddy Collins, who went to England and joined the army. It is shrouded in mystery whether Johanna's mother (nee Fitzpatick) was widowed and remarried and therefore became Collins or if Paddy was born out of wedlock.

As my mother was only 12 when her mother died she didn't get the full story. My mother has only one remaing sibling alive and we will be contacting him to see if he can enlighten us! Johanna was married at a young age to Joseph Patrick Hourigan, had 6 children and lived in Limerick City until her death. All the older kids used to be sent out from Limerick City to Killonan to their grandmother (Johanna's mother) for safety during "the troubles."

I’ll update soon!

John Anthony Murnan of Chicago Connections?

John Anthony Murnan was my grandfather. He was born 8/25/1901, and was the son of Thomas F. Murnan and Nellie Mahon. Thomas was born in 1870 in Chicago, also. He died about 1906. He had three sisters and several brothers, names and locations unknown. I have a chart from my mother showing an Edward Murnan as being the father of Thomas, with a side chart of John, William, Mike (who has a notation "Denver" next to his name) as siblings to Edward, however, I cannot be certain of the accuracy of this information.

Murnane vs Murnan/Mernon in Wisconsin

My ggg-grandparents were John and Bridget Mernan or Mernon or ??.

I've seen so many different spellings of their last name. Other than census records, I have not found any other records with the Mernan or Mernon name. Their name, as pronounced, may sound like Murnane so I'd like to post this information to your web site.

John was born in Ireland about 1808 and Bridget Dorn or Doran was born in Ireland about 1810. They immigrated to Canada before 1844 and United States after 1851. In 1870, they owned a farm in the Town of Howard in Brown County, Wisconsin where they lived at least until 1885. They had at least 4 children who were listed on the Wisconsin census in 1870:

The Griffith's Land Valuation listed about 15 Mernan families in Counties Wexford, Waterford, Carlow and Wicklow. The current Ireland telephone directories do not list any Mernan or Mernon families.

Could the Mernan's be Murnane's?

I Am Another Murnane

Thank you so much for maintaining the amazing Murnane web site. My name is Anesha Murnane and I have just started researching my father’s side of my family. I know very little because the name "Murnane" was not the original name. The history of the name is something like this: the original name was Murnain, it was then changed to Murnin by some unknown ancestor. This was my great-grand father James Patrick Murnin.

His name changed because of a military transfer to Murnan. My grand-father John Patrick was born as Murnin but his name changed to Murnan like his father's.

John's name changed again with a military transfer to Murnane. This is what my father figured out about the name but we are not positive that the name changed because of military changes. James Patrick, b.? d., May 1962, married Hazel Willis and they had four children, John Patrick b. March 15, 1924; Billy; Gretta; and Gerard. I have not been able to trace the family back any further because of the name changes and I was wondering if you have found any of these people in your research.

Thank you for any help you can give.

Molly Murnane Makes Connections;
Finds Murnanes in Movies

I was just checking the website to see what was new. I haven't gotten much further, although I did get Thomas Murnane's Civil War pension records which had some useful information, including his wife's maiden name. I've decided that looking for Murnanes is a lot like mining for gold; I have to shift through an awful lot of possibilities, but every once in a while I come up with a nugget of the good stuff. So, anyway, I'm still looking to get Thomas back to Ireland.

I've been in touch with Joe Murnane. He e-mailed me because he had an obituary of my grandfather's from the New York Times in 1950. He'd never run across anyone connected to it. He's also got a Thomas in his family who just kind of "disappeared," so we're looking into whether that could be my Thomas. Wouldn't that be exciting?

The big news, though, relates to my grandfather, Allan Murnane. I'm sure I mentioned in a previous e-mail that he and his wife were actors. She only did stage, but he did movies, too.

Well, last week a son of one of my cousins e-mailed me and said he'd run across one of my postings mentioning Allan Murnane. It turns out that he and his father had been trying to figure out how to find my dad because they have a copy of one of the movies Allan Murnane made!! It was made around 1916 in Ithaca, New York. Somehow Mike (the son) had been able to find a contact at the Ithaca library and somehow he got a copy of the film. We're very excited about this. It turns out he made at least 11 films, mostly serials. Ithaca College is having a film festival in June and they're going to show another of his films with silent movie music and everything. So, we have a Murnane who was a film pioneer to add to all the other accomplished Murnanes out there!!

Still Searching For Owen Murnane’s Brother

About a year ago I posted a query about a missing branch of my family. My work has produced no real leads, so I thought I'd try another posting to see what I might drum up this time around. Here goes:

"Help me solve a mystery"

Owen Murnane (my great great grandfather) left County Cork in approximately 1845-47 with his wife Catherine Cronin and their one-year-old son Patrick. Family lore has it that they arrived in Quebec, Canada and were processed through Grosse Ile, and then came up the St. Lawrence. We know for certain that they settled in Ogdensburg, NY, which was a common entry point into the US from Canada. We also know that Catherine's brother John Cronin came with them, and brought his 7-year-old daughter Mary with him. Now, here's the part I'm most interested in pursuing. Family lore has it that Owen had a brother who also made the crossing at the same time, but for some reason he ended up in Plattsburgh, NY, and was never heard from again.

Joe Murnane of Williamson, NY tells me that all of the living Plattsburgh Murnanes are accounted for in his family tree, so I can't lay claim to any of them.

So what happened to Owen's missing brother? Where are his descendants today? Do any of these names ring any bells? If you have the other half of this family mystery, get in contact with me.

Looking for Murnane-Idarola-Pierce Connections

My family originally came from Ireland and settled in Brooklyn and Canarsie, New York. We have since spread out and many of us are in Arizona now. My great-great-grandmother was named Nellie Lynch and arrived in the late 1800's. Her daughter Helen Lynch married Frank Idarola. Their daughter, Doris Idarola, married William John Murnane. He married Eleanor Pierce and produced four children, Michael William, Kenneth Francis, James Pierce and Patricia Kathleen Carter (nee Murnane).

We have branches named Mina, Isroe, Pierce, Idarola and Toomey. Please e-mail if you might be a relative or know of any. We also have an Uncle Frank Idarola who had two sons. I can only remember Stevie and Aunt Marie. They lived in North Beach, Maryland. I have several uncles on my mother's side in the Boston area: John Toomey and Gene Toomey and Harold Pierce in Las Vegas, Nevada, and Cousins Marcia Pierce Berger

and Karyn Pierce Paxton. Please e-mail if you are a relative or know of any. My mother was born in Keene, New Hampshire, my father in Brooklyn, New York. I hope to hear from someone soon as I am new and this is my first attempt to find my "roots".

Searching for Links to Murnane-Brady-O’Farrell
Connection of New York in late 1800s, early 1900s

This is in reference to my grandmother. Although I cannot connect the last name with any document, there has to be a connection somewhere. My grandmother was born 9 May 1895. She grew up with the name Mary Brady. Never knew her parents, had a street address for a place of birth and mother’s name, Annie Murnane and father, Frank Brady. A birth certificate did not exist. That info came from Catholic Charities in New York City to her, in the 1920's, I believe.

After many years of research, I found the following to be the truth. She was born Henrietta O'Farrell at the New York Infant Asylum, New York City, 9 May, 1895. She was born out of wedlock. Although the father’s name is listed as "ow," other info is there. Her mother’s name on her birth certificate is listed as Annie O'Farrell, maiden name, unmarried. She was later baptized Mary Brady, mother being Annie O’Farrell, and father Frank Brady. At 2 ½, she was put in a home, reason being "illegitimate."

I don't understand, nor can I find out where Catholic Charities connected the name Murnane to her. Have you got any loose ends? Also, she was told by someone her parents were from County Cork and County Kerry. I have found conflicting info on this, with no back ups. Just thought maybe she was a missing link to the Murnane family.

Searcing for News about Murnane-Atkinson Descendants;     aus-tiny.gif (1255 bytes)
Settled in Boorowa, NSW, in 1870s

My husband's grandmother was a Murnane and I am just beginning to track down who's who!

James Murnane married Bridget Atkinson in 1875 in Boorowa, a small country town in New South Wales Australia. Their children were William Joseph, born 1876; Thomas Michael, born 1878; Mary Lavinia, born 1879; Bridget, born 1881; James, born 1882; Margaret A., born 1884; John, born 1887; and Catherine, born 1888.

Their son, James, married Florence Barrett in 1905 in Grenfell and had two daughters, Dorothy May, born 1906 (husband's grandmother), and Irene Isobel, born 1909.Other descendants follow.

I am unable to find a death certificate of James Murnane, Sr., but his son, James’ Baptismal certificate states his father was from Limerick, as indeed Bridget Murnane's (nee Atkinson, his wife) death certificate places her birthplace.

Bridget's date of birth was around 1851 (estimated from death certificate), so I guess James' birth would have been about the same.

Other various Murnanes are registered at the local cemetery at Boorowa and so far I have not correlated them but enclose for your info.

Cemetery:

John Murnane, died 27 December 1872, aged 10, son of William and Johanna, born in Limerick, so would have migrated to Australia after 1862.

Margaret Murnane, died 15 March 1864, aged 22, daughter of Alexander Cameron Murnane and McMguiness, so born around 1842.

Michael Murnane, died 29 May 1874, aged 32, son of William and Bridget, so born around 1842.

William Murnane, died 6 August 1873, aged 76, son of (Illegible) and Catherine Murnane, so born around 1797 (most likely in Ireland).

Do you have any connections on your database with these Murnanes? I am unable to work out how/when they came to Australia. I have briefly read Paul Murnane's database and can't see any connection.

Hope you have some clues.

More News About Troy (NY) Murnanes

When I started my Murnane research 18 years ago I thought it would be a few years to complete the work. I was surprised to see all the Murnanes out there. I have, with the help of my brother Tim and his wife Mary, completed 5 of eight branches of the Chateaugay, New York Murnanes. Recently, I discovered two Michael Murnanes in Troy, New York one of whom might be the head of one of the missing branches of the family:

    Michael Murnane, died 2 July 1885, age 45, seaman US Navy;
Michael Murnane, died 28 March 1881.

I think the last one is from our family, but I have no proof . The Troy library is checking this out. I do have a census report for Michael Murnane as follows:

    Michael Murnane age 44 b.1836
    Alice age 42 wife b.1838
        Kate 21 1859
        John 19 1861
        James 17 1863
        Harry 10 1870
        Charles 8 1872
        Mary 5 1875
        Edward 3 1877

Would you add this information to the Bulletin Board so the Troy Murnanes can have a look at this information and see if there might be a connection to their families? I would like to hear from any of the Troy Murnanes about the above.

Looking for Links to Murnans in Boston (formerly England)    gb-tiny.gif (820 bytes)

By way of an introduction My name is Stephen Murnan and my family and I live in Bristol, England.

I have found your site interesting and informative confirming many of the stories my parents and grand parents have told me about our family names and its origins.

My Great-great-grandfather was a ships master from Cork in the 19th Century. He plied between North America, Boston, New York, South Carolina, the British Isles, Bristol and Swansea and places around the Mediterranean and West Africa (we have a suspicion he may have been on some of the last British slave boats for which Bristol was famous).

He married a Welsh girl he met in Swansea and settled in Bristol, England where a branch of the family headed by my father John and uncle Patrick still lives. In his mid thirties he did not return from a voyage to Boston, the family found out he had purchased land around Boston Harbour, started a lumber business and eventually settled down with another woman and added to or started another offshoot of the family.

My Great-grandfather dropped the 'e' to Anglicize the name some time around the turn of the last century.

I would like to trace my ancestors and relatives and as such wondered if you could give me some advice on how to start?

Trying to Trace Loretta Murnane of Emly

My name is Kathleen Diane Zawacki. I'm very new at this, however I must begin somewhere. My mother has been helping me with family photos and memories and the following is what we know so far. My maternal grandmother's middle name is the town of her father's birth in Ireland. Her name was Loretta Emly (not Emily) Murnane, she was born 22 March 1905 and died 30 January 1989, in York, Pennsylvania, USA. She married Francis J. Mann in York on 3 September 1925.

Her father was Michael Murnane, born 9 September 1871 and died 18 November 1918. Her mother was Anna L. Classen, born 18 January 1874 and died 17 March 1957. Michael Murnane is the son of Patrick Murnane and Mary Sullivan, a first cousin to the boxer John L. Sullivan. Anna Classen was the daughter of Herman Classen and Mary Stenger.

I believe Emly is County Waterford. Any assistance on where to go next (and how) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. I found your site to be most interesting.

Update on Search for Colleen Murnane

(Response by Tim Murnane to Christopher Stephens’ message of 6 February, 2000.)

Hi Christopher,

If you go back in the archives of the Murnane Website Bulletin Board, you will find a Colleen Murnane from Troy, New York listed on December 14, 1998.

Her request as best I can write it up is as follows:

"Another Troy, New York Murnane"

My name is Colleen Murnane and I come from a LARGE family of Murnanes in Troy, New York, outside of Albany. We have immediate family in Troy, Syracuse, Rochester and Plattsburgh, New York, as well as other States. I would be interested in hearing from you on the subject. My Grandmother Marion is still alive, and her husband John Murnane is recently deceased. Both were born around 1920 and had parents that lived in Troy.

Whether this is the Colleen Murnane that you are looking for, I am not sure. Unfortunately Colleen failed to respond to our several attempts to contact her about connections with our family which also had relations in Plattsburgh and in the Northern New York area. We also believe that one of our Great-great-uncles (Michael Murnane) may have settled in the Troy area. If you are able to get in touch with Colleen will you please ask her to contact us for further discussion of our family Genealogy.

My part of the family is written up on the Murnane Website as "The Murnane's of Upstate New York

Good luck in your search. Please let me know how you make out with your attempts to contact Colleen

John Murnane in Colorado Looking for Columbus Links

I want thank you for an interesting and informative site, I have been trying to find the names of my Grandparents which I know very little about. My father and mother were divorced when I was three months old and I never knew either my father or grandparents.

They did come from Columbus, Ohio. My father’s name was Henry J. Murnane, Mother’s name Eleanor A. Trisler. I continue to look for information regarding my father’s side of the family.

A point of information about Colorado is that I've brought a whole lot of Murnanes here with me. A short tree would be as follows:

John G. Murnane Sr.
Sherrill M. Bodge

John G. Murnane Jr.     Richard G. Murnane

John G. Murnane III     Sabrina Murnane

Christopher Murnane
Jessica J. Murnane
Michelle J. Murnane
Samantha Murnane
Nicole Murnane

As you can see there are more than four Murnanes in Colorado. Again thank you for all your efforts to bring the history of the Murnane family together.

Here’s More on Baseball’s Tim Murnane

I stumbled across your wonderful web site and thought you might be interested in some further information on Tim Murnane - famous 19th Century baseball player and sportswriter.

Timothy Hayes Murnane moved to Naugatuck, Connecticut from Tipperary Ireland with his family at the age of six. (There is some conflicting info on this. Some sources say he was BORN in Naugatuck.

His first professional baseball engagement was with the Middletown (Connecticut) Mansfield club in 1872. Murnane was one of the star players on the team and was known for his sense of humor and practical jokes on teammates. He went on to have a solid eight-year professional baseball career in the National Association and National League. Tim died February 7, 1917.

At his death Murnane left only a small estate for his widow and six children (two from previous marriage). As a result, a benefit game was held at Fenway Park that raised $14000. The American League also paid for the large monument that was placed at his gravesite. Upon his death the Boston Globe remembered Tim Murnane as "a man of the utmost simplicity of character and of wonderful ideals, which survive all the experiences of a life that make most men cynics. He saw men truly, but he idealized the game with which most of his career was bound up. He believed in baseball sincerely as a former of character and as a great factor in making Americans better men." (Boston Globe 2/8/1917)

I have written a complete history of the Middletown Mansfield baseball club in which Tim Murnane is prominently featured. The book is called "Middletown's Season In The Sun - The Story of Connecticut's First Professional Baseball Team." A photograph of Murnane is also shown on the front cover of the book which I have enclosed as an attachment. (NOTE: Cover of this book appears in the Photo Section of the Murnane Website.) If anyone has any more information on Timothy Hayes Murnane or would like more info from me or would like to purchase the book, they can contact me at DArcidiacono@SNET.NET or 72 Charles Mary Drive East Hampton Connecticut 06424.

Good luck with your very interesting work on your family name!

Searching for Mary Lou Murnane

I am trying to help a Legal Researcher locate a Mary Lou Murnane, age probably in her 50's or 60’s. Her mother was a Mary V. Murnane born May 26, 1906 (possibly in Massachusetts) and died in Florida in February, 1993. There were two other children, a Thomas W. and a Joyce Murnane Gelder.

Mary Lou Murnane was never married and her last known address was Chevy Chase Maryland in 1993. She reportedly worked in Washington, D.C. at that time.

I have located a Mary L. Murnane in Minneapolis Minnesota, but doubt that this is the one. I have written to her and am waiting for a response. The possibility of this being the correct Murnane is slim. I would suspect this Mary L. Murnane is related to the Minnesota. Murnanes instead.

Any information would be appreciated. Thanks for taking the time to review this information and to respond.

Murnanes In Zimbabwe, Africa, Share Information  zw-tiny.gif (664 bytes)

Hi there.

Happened to look for a website on the Murnane family and came across your site. Thought I would let you know that there are Murnanes living in Zimbabwe. My grandfather was from Dublin and worked in Singapore (he set up the water system that is still been used today). He was a prisoner of war in Chenghai during the war by the Japanese and then retired in Cape Town due to ill health.

My dad didn't see his family from the age 8 to 18 and only met up with them in Cape Town. He went to university there but unfortunately was not fluent in Afrikaans so he came to Rhodesia which was a British Colony at the time where he met my mother.

My uncle in the UK has a phenomenal family tree and I am sure my father would be extremely interested in any Australian contacts. I know he does have family in America and Ireland.

William and Mary Murnane of Minneapolis

This is a follow-up to a message I sent about one year ago. I'm researching the names on our church windows - 21 Irish individuals and one of the windows is "In memory of William & Mary Murnane. The local cemetary records show that William died January 18, 1892, age 64, and Mary died March 12, 1890, age 62. Through digging last year we have found that they owned land in Dakota County until the spring of 1880 when he moved to St. Anthony (now Minneapolis). His brother, Michael also made claim, but moved to Vermilion (Minnesota).

It is the Michael line that I would like to get in touch with as I figure it may link to this. William and Mary's daughter, Bridget died February 2,1953 with no survivors that we know of. Please help me out as do not know which way to go because I know of no line in this family. Thank you as we have spent countless hours in the libraries. I would appreciate any advice.

Note About Tim Murnane, Sportswriter

Thought you might be interested in this question in ASK THE GLOBE in The Boston Globe on Wednesday, January 12, 2000:

"Q. There's a monument in Boston's Mt. Calvary Cemetery to Timothy Hayes Murnane (1851-1917), which reads: Pioneer of Baseball, Champion of Its Integrity, Gifted and Fearless Writer, This Monument Erected by the American League. Who was Murnane?

"A. Tim Murnane was baseball editor of The Boston Globe for nearly 30 years, from 1888 until the night he dropped dead of a heart attack at the Shubert Theater. A native of Naugatuck, Connecticut, he joined a professional baseball team in Statford, Connecticut, when he was 18. He moved on to teams in Savannah, Georgia, and later played for Philadelphia and Boston.

"He was known for his bouncing run and spectacular catches. In 1886 he launched a small newspaper called the Boston Referee and also briefly took a franchise on a team called the Boston Blues. An important part of his Globe career was his membership on baseball's National Board of Arbitration."

It's funny because I found a clipping of his death notice in the family stuff. Also, I have posted a photo of my great-grandfather Thomas Murnane on my web page under Works in Progress - That's All I know, http://www.bampro.com

Murnin Family of County Down

While I realize you are in three southwest counties by description, still, I have Murnin family in County Down, in Kilcoo Parish. And when my great-grandfather immigrated about 1850, he went up to Albany and Troy, New York, and lo! his name became Lawrence Murning.

He was born in 1835, and because records are so sparse (that's a part of the litany), little can be learned of him and his family in Down. He was born in the foothills of the Mourne mountains, and the countryside is beautiful. He moved to Cattaraugus County, New York, where he and his wife, Elizabeth Quinn, reared a family of twelve children on a farm purchased in the early 1860s.

Does anyone know of these people? Are there any resources in that area of Ireland I might tap into? Your help is appreciated. (I have visited the parish and know the Murnins lived in Moyad.)

Looking For Information About George Murnane of Kansas and Texas

I am doing research for my daughter-in-law. Her grandmother was a Murnane, her great-grandfather was George T. Murnane, who died in El Paso, Texas in 1944. George was 73 at the time of his death. Her Grandmother died when Lisa was quite small and so far we haven't received much information on the family.

Her great-grandmother Murnane died early and the grandfather remarried, the wife was Willie Wave Murnane. As you can see we don't know much about the family other than a newspaper account of the death of George T. Murnane. My daughter-in-law's e-mail address is LisaKisley@cs.com if you could be of any help she would appreciate it. She is new to this family research would appreciate any help we could get.

George Murnane lived in Kansas until approx. 1914, if that helps.

Looking for Information on Thomas Murnane;
Lived in Philadelphia; Converted to Catholicism

This is the first that I've visited the site in awhile and it looks great! I especially like the pictures and the different family trees.

I haven't been able to come up with much about my Murnanes. My sister and I posted a message last summer about them. To briefly recap (for any new Murnanes out there), my dad, Allan Murnane, was born in New Rochelle, New York. His dad, Albert (later Allan - he was an actor) was born in Philadelphia in 1882. His father, Thomas, was born in Philadelphia in 1857 and he died around 1884-1885. He had one brother, Robert, and three sisters, Mary, Kate and Annie. His father, Thomas, Sr., born about 1822-24 in Ireland, first shows up in Philadelphia around 1847 in a city directory. He is already married to a woman named Elizabeth who the census says is from Connecticut, and their daughter Mary was already born.

I'd like to find out if he was living somewhere else in the U.S. (maybe Connecticut) before going to Philadelphia. He was a printer, he joined the 5th Pennsylvania Cavalry during the Civil War (when he was close to 40!!) Also, my dad said his father converted to Catholicism when his wife did, so that tells me they were probably Protestant. Not wanting to start a religious war or anything, but do you (or anyone else) happen to know if any particular branches of the family were Protestant? I thought that might help my search.

I printed several of the pages from the site to take to my dad so he can read them. I think he'll enjoy them. Thanks for all your hard work.

I am searching for a Kevin Murnane (his address and/or telephone number) who originally lived in Clontarf, Dublin, Ireland and emigrated to the USA. He was a member of the Clontarf Boy Scouts around 1950/60. He has or had brothers living in Clontarf. Hoping your family website may be of assistance.

Murnanes of County Clare  aus-tiny.gif (1255 bytes)

(Copy of message to Paul Murnane in Sydney, Australia)

It's great to see the new Aussie site. I have carried out research into my family tree who I have discovered originated in County Clare, Ireland.

Apparently the Murnane family name was quite rare in County Clare with only 11 families recorded in the late 1800's on the Index of Baptisms which dated back to 1828 when only one family was recorded.

From the information that I supplied to the Clare Heritage Centre, it appears that my great-great-grandfather Patrick Murnane was born in County Clare in approximately 1828 to his parents James Murnane and Mary Anglie (Angly). Due to poor record keeping the record of their marriage could not be uncovered. Of the 47 parishes in the county only 11 have registers pre-dating 1830.

The centre suggested that Patrick Murnane arrived into Sydney on the ship 'Joshua' on 6th April, 1858. The records show that on 9th June, 1857. Patrick Murnane gave his age as 29 when he applied for passage to Australia. His address was given as Clonlara. He was sponsored by a Jane Murnane who was residing at Bedlam Point, New South Wales.

The records show that Patrick Murnane arrived in Sydney on 6th April 1858 on the ship 'Joshua' and his age was given as 28. His place of origin in County Clare was given as Doonass which is another name for Clonlara. Apparently there is a 30% rate if inaccuracy for these records. The church records for the Parish of Clonlara/Doonass do not commence until 1851. The shipping records also show that he was accompanied by a Michael Angly (Anglie) and his age was recorded as 19. His address was given as Kilmore which is an area in the Parish of Broadford, County Clare. His parents were given as James and Mary Angly both of whom were living in County Clare at the time. It is suggested that Patrick and Michael were first cousins.

My large family are Novacastrians and wide spread in this area. I hope that this twig of the tree will one day assist someone else with their tracking of the family roots.

Longford Murnanes in Tasmania, Australia  aus-tiny.gif (1255 bytes)

(Copy of message to Paul Murnane in Sydney, Australia)

I just found the Murnane web site (well my husband did really). I am a descendant of the Longford, Tasmanian Murnanes and I have a large collection of information re: the descendants of Edward (Edmond/Edmund) Murnane, which includes many Certificates and lots of Convict papers.

The Murnane web site mentioned that they were in the process of writing the Murnane's of Longford Page. I am most interested in finding out what information you already have and if you wish, I can share some of my information.

In fact, I have just found a juicy bit of information - a list which records the names of Edward Murnane's siblings! 5 sisters and 1 brother, a note along side of his brother Patrick's name records that he had been transported 12 months prior to Edward's transportation! I wonder what happen to him? There is no record of a Patrick Murnane marrying or dying in the Pioneer Index of Tasmania, however there are two Pat. Murnanes on the Victorian Pioneer Index. Could one of these be Edward's brother?
